Rural Life Associates enjoy the benefits of helping others reach their goals. They facilitate as clients, set priorities and goals. They act as a mentor/coach as people experience transition. Associates are members of the rural community who minister to their neighbors.

In Msgr. Ligutti's foot steps all Rural Life Associates will respond as friends of the land and be a person of the people, assist them in achieving a sense of wholeness and hope for the future..

PASSAGES focuses on the immediate personal and livelihood concerns of people in rural Iowa. Iowa is well known for its caring and supportive people. When there is a need, someone rises to the occasion. At times, however, needs arise among people in the community that call for special knowledge or resources.

Sometimes needs or concerns go beyond what are comfortably shared with a “usual” friend.
Sometimes it helps to talk confidentially with someone about resources that are available for personal concerns.
Sometimes it is hard to know where to begin to make life improvements and a good listener can assist in helping to decide on a first step.
Sometimes it helps to check in with someone when working toward a goal.

PASSAGES trains community members of all faiths, Rural Life Associates (RLAs), to respond in such instances. Note: The service of RLAs is not a substitute for mental health counseling.

Women and men who are accepted for training come from various backgrounds and from urban and rural locations. Applicants supply references and undergo a criminal check. Once general training is concluded, RLAs can benefit from ongoing training opportunities and support from PASSAGES. In addition, RLAs are part of a network of RLAs in their community, region, and across Iowa.

There is no cost for Rural Life Associate training. Continuing education credit has been approved for registered nurses, licensed marriage and family therapists, licensed social workers (approved sponsor #306), and licensed mental health counselors.

The amount of time devoted to service depends on the availability of the RLA. Training more than one RLA in a community is encouraged to create a local support system.

Training consists of four modules. Three modules are availableon video. The fourth module is scheduled at a time and place established among trainees and the instructor.

Become a Rural Life Associate in your congregation or community. Training is informative and builds confidence! Ask a friend to join you.
